With BREASTFEST 2008 just over a week away, the excitement is building. I have indeed returned from my jaunt to THE City and am ready to tackle the remaining week.
Now, you may not know this, but I graduated from UNC (uh, the first time) with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. News-editorial. So despite seeking out a graduate education in counseling, I still appreciate a good story.
Which leads me to the book I have been reading – and especially enjoyed during my somewhat bumpy return to North Carolina. Naked, by David Sedaris.
What does this have to do with cancer, you ask?
By now you should know that this blog is all about making light of cancer – well, what else can you do? But – it’s also about facing cancer for what it is, accepting the challenge, and making the best of the short time on earth we’re all given.
Sedaris writes about his own mother’s cancer in “Ashes.”
“There must exist some middle ground, a place where one was tortured on a daily basis but still allowed a few moments of pleasure, taken wherever one could find it. That place seemed to be Raleigh, North Carolina, so why the big fuss? Why couldn’t she just stay where she was and not have cancer?”
“You can’t brace yourself for famine if you’ve never known hunger; it is foolish to even try. The most you can do is to eat up while you still can, stuffing yourself, shoveling it in with both hands and licking clean the plates, recalling every course in vivid detail.”
So, my friends, with BreastFest 2008 quickly approaching, I urge you to do the same. Keep grabbing all of life that you can.
Including those BreastFest tickets.
